What can Greg Giraldo teach us?
This post really has little to do with critical thinking, but there are two points that I think are important to make, using Greg Giraldo as an example. Greg Giraldo (December 10, 1965 – September 29, 2010) was an American … Continue reading

A lesson(?) in illogical fanatics
– Originally written on my old blog on 5/6/2008 – I am a HUGE sports fan. As illogical as it may be, my mood can oftentimes depend on the fate of sports teams that I follow. But in no way … Continue reading

Like Led Zeppelin?
Recently I noticed an ad on FaceBook, which is unusual for me as I am typically very good at ignoring them. And while the ad was one that I actually found somewhat interesting, something about it struck me as odd. … Continue reading

“In the Cards”
Are there topics you shouldn’t be allowed to discuss? Some governments and institutions—and even some individuals—want to keep certain topics off limits. This is especially true with religion. In many places, discussions and questions about religion are discouraged, even punished. … Continue reading

Julia Sweeney’s “Letting Go of God” Monologue
If you know Julia Sweeney from Saturday Night Live, yes this is the same person; but it’s not at all the same style. I enjoyed her on SNL, although she was far from a “must-see” cast member in my view. … Continue reading

Is Prayer Offensive? Well, It All Depends…
“Do you find prayer offensive?” This was the question posed on the facebook page of a number of different friends over the past few weeks. While I’m not sure where or why this meme started it’s a question that seems … Continue reading

The Believer’s Brain – Russ Schaade
As with many of these segments, this one began on the facebook page of a mutual friend of mine and a believer. In this case Russ Schaade and I had a bit of a back and forth which was started … Continue reading
Censorship… or Why I’ve Been Silent As Of Late
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. ~ Voltaire
There are many types of censorship, and clearly some are worse than others. If a government attempts to censor what it’s citizens can say that would probably be the most egregious version. For a government to attempt to tell people what they can and can not say violates what the purpose of a government should be (that purpose being protecting and serving it’s citizens). But not all censorship is quite so obvious or quite so universally condemned. Continue reading

Mad Libs
I don’t know if I’m dating myself, but I’m going to play a simple version of Mad Libs to ask some questions on morality: ____________ (Person A) commits a crime (murder, rape, torture – something that causes extreme physical harm … Continue reading

Ricky Gervais – “My Argument With God”
I believe this article, from Ricky Gervais’ website, speaks for itself, so I won’t ruin it with my own interpretation just yet, but if you’d like to hear my views, I’ll answer any questions you have in the comments. I … Continue reading

The Believer’s Brain – Vicki Green & Amy Allbright
Well once again I find myself in a debate with a believer, although this time there are two stark differences. The first difference is that I was debating multiple believers (Vicki Green & Amy Allbright) simultaneously (there was a 3rd, … Continue reading
