What got you into critical thinking?

For me it was one name. Played by many men over the years, but it always comes back to just one name. Sherlock Holmes I recall reading the Doyle stories as a kid. I read every one of them back … Continue reading

You Are Wrong

You are wrong. It’s not the end of the world, but it is a fact. You’re wrong. I did not want to have to be the one to tell you. But when you look at all of the evidence, it’s … Continue reading

What is Critical Thinking?

From: Dan Kurland’s www.criticalreading.com What is Critical Thinking? No one always acts purely objectively and rationally. We connive for selfish interests.  We gossip, boast, exaggerate, and equivocate. It is “only human” to wish to validate our prior knowledge, to vindicate our … Continue reading

A few things I believe “on faith”

I pride myself on not believing much without evidence for my beliefs. For instance, before I would be willing to believe in god, bigfoot, psychics, dowsing, alien abductions, life after death, etc I would require evidence of those claims to … Continue reading

What can Greg Giraldo teach us?

This post really has little to do with critical thinking, but there are two points that I think are important to make, using Greg Giraldo as an example. Greg Giraldo (December 10, 1965 – September 29, 2010) was an American … Continue reading

A lesson(?) in illogical fanatics

– Originally written on my old blog on 5/6/2008 – I am a HUGE sports fan. As illogical as it may be, my mood can oftentimes depend on the fate of sports teams that I follow. But in no way … Continue reading

Like Led Zeppelin?

“In the Cards”

Are there topics you shouldn’t be allowed to discuss? Some governments and institutions—and even some individuals—want to keep certain topics off limits. This is especially true with religion. In many places, discussions and questions about religion are discouraged, even punished. … Continue reading

Julia Sweeney’s “Letting Go of God” Monologue

If you know Julia Sweeney from Saturday Night Live, yes this is the same person; but it’s not at all the same style. I enjoyed her on SNL, although she was far from a “must-see” cast member in my view. … Continue reading

Censorship… or Why I’ve Been Silent As Of Late

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. ~ Voltaire

There are many types of censorship, and clearly some are worse than others. If a government attempts to censor what it’s citizens can say that would probably be the most egregious version. For a government to attempt to tell people what they can and can not say violates what the purpose of a government should be (that purpose being protecting and serving it’s citizens). But not all censorship is quite so obvious or quite so universally condemned. Continue reading
